I am retaking an English course to strive for a higher grade for application to the radiology program at Southern Crescent Technical College. The following contains my weekly journal for my ENGL 1101 class.
My name is Amy Haisten. I was born in Decatur and grew up in Jackson where my father was raised. My father, David, is a CPA and CFP in Jackson. My mother, Sandra, is a recently retired clinical social worker. I have one brother, Michael, who is one and a half years older than me and lives in Smyrna with his wife, Melissa, and their eight-year-old son, Evan. He works in intelligent self-service solutions at Jacada in Alpharetta. I am single, and my only child is an English Mastiff named Falkor who is almost two years old. His name comes from the movie, The Neverending Story. This movie was one of my favorites growing up along with Labyrinth and The Last Unicorn.
I enjoy reading and watching streaming services like Netflix. I still have a passion for the fantasy genre and enjoy most fantasy movies and books like The Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit, and the Harry Potter series. I love almost anything art related. My favorite artists are Vincent van Gogh, Grant Wood, and Jessica Swift (a surface pattern designer). I enjoy adult coloring books by Johanna Basford and Kerby Rosanes. When I had more free time, I enjoyed playing World of Warcraft. I am a liberal who cares about the environment and loves animals especially dogs, turtles, and sharks.
I attended Jackson High School and was a band geek. I played percussion and went to Berry College as a music major. While at Berry, I switched majors to art. Then I transferred to LaGrange College where I graduated with a B.A. in Art and Design with a concentration in Graphic Design. I also received a diploma from Central Georgia Technical College in Animation and Multimedia with a concentration in Web Design. I later returned to college to take some business and accounting courses from Gordon State College and Middle Georgia State University.
My first job out of college was at the Fulton County Daily Report in Atlanta. I have also worked at the Monroe County Reporter in Forsyth and the Courier Herald in Dublin. I also worked at a marketing company focused on the multi-housing industry. I have been a Media Tech at a church where I prepared multi-media presentations for the contemporary service and edited video for the television station. I freelance through my own company, Fancy Turtle Media (www.fancyturtle.media).
I plan to switch to the medical field where I can raise my income potential and receive medical benefits. I am working on the prerequisites for the Radiologic Technology program at Southern Crescent Technical College. While I work on the prerequisites, I am a server at The Brickery in Jackson. The Brickery is a New York-style pizza restaurant. I also returned to the Monroe County Reporter as a part-time graphic designer. This semester I am taking English and Anatomy II. In the future, I would like to build my freelance business to enter the surface pattern design industry while I work in radiology.
